How To Speed Up Your Post Surgery Recovery Time

If you’ve recently had surgery, or you’re waiting for an operation, you’re probably thinking about how to speed up your post surgery recovery time.

After all, recovering from surgery can be a painful, stressful and difficult time so the shorter the recovery time the better.

Surgery is a major life event to you, but reassuringly, certain surgeries are more and more common in our society. As our population grows older, age related surgeries increase as our bodies struggle to keep up (knee, neck, back, hip

In this blog, you can find out the typical recovery times for the most common surgery types and how to recover from surgery faster.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From Surgery?

First of all, you need to work out what recovery looks like for you – do you want to be able to get about your day to day life without pain or discomfort, or do you want to be able to live a very busy life filled with sports, leisure activities and socialising?

If you’re the former, your recovery time should be towards the shorter end of the range.

If you’re the latter, your recovery time will take longer because you have bigger aspirations and therefore will need more time, and potentially more support along the way.

Knee Surgery Recovery Time

The recovery time for knee surgery, where you can stop using walking aids and should be able to return to daily activities is around 6 weeks post surgery.

However, pain and swelling may last for up to 3 months.

Neck Surgery Recovery Time

For neck surgery, recovery times are typically between 4 to 6 weeks, and a full recovery will usually take up to 3 months.

Hip Surgery Recovery Time

Similar to your knees, your hips should take around 6 weeks to recover to the point where you can resume normal, everyday activities.

For anything more strenuous such as heavy lifting, this may take a further 4-6 weeks of recovery for the typical person.

Hernia Surgery Recovery Time

Post hernia surgery, you should be able to return to normal activities within as little as 2 weeks.

For more challenging activities, or heavy lifting, it should be safe to do after 4 to 6 weeks.

What Impacts My Post Surgery Recovery Time?

Your post surgery recovery time will depend on a number of factors – some that you can control, and some you can’t.

Your age, weight, medical history, nutrition, sleeping habits and general health are just a few of the things that will influence how soon you heal after surgery to some degree.

Whilst there isn’t much you can do about your age, or your medical history, you may be able to work on other things pre surgery, and during your recovery.

Preparing For Surgery

Whilst you are waiting for your surgery date, you can be doing to improve your chances of a quick recovery.

Our team regularly see pre surgery patients, and by addressing other injuries, improving posture and balance, loosening tight joints and strengthen weak muscles, you are getting your body in the best position possible.

Physical therapy and other treatment options such as EMTT, Shockwave Therapy, Orthotics and Cupping can help with this, and can help you not only improve physically, but help you feel more in control and reduce anxiety about your upcoming surgery.
