Elbow, Wrist and Hand Pain Relief?

You likely will never realize how dependent your day to day life is on the functional and pain-free use of your hands, wrists and elbows until you experience an injury or other cause of chronic pain that impedes your ability to do tasks freely and without discomfort. Hand, wrist and elbow pain creates a huge complication in your life, preventing you from being able to engage in the simplest of tasks without discomfort. Depending on the severity of the pain, issues with your hands, wrists or elbows could prevent you from being able to drive, work on the computer, cook dinner, use your phone, do tasks around the house, and so much more.

What makes matters even more complicated is the interconnected nature of your hands and arms. Injury to one part of your hand or arm could cause pain throughout the entire area. Hurting your finger could cause pain in your hand, and a cramp in your palm could lead to discomfort through your wrist and arm.

Leaving hand pain, wrist pain, or elbow pain to heal on its own is a bad idea. Regardless of how hard you try to rest these areas, chances are the constant need to complete even minor tasks will continue to aggravate the pain and may cause you enhanced discomfort. If you experience pain that lasts longer than a day or two, it is a good idea to contact your physical therapist to gain understanding about the reason for the pain, and to explore different treatment and pain management options.

Because your hands and arms are so interconnected, a task or injury that involves one part, such as your lower arm, can end up causing everything from finger numbness to elbow pain. Don’t make any assumptions about when the pain will go away. In many situations, minor issues become major setbacks because immediate action wasn’t taken to resolve an injury. A physical therapist can help you sort through the best options for managing your hand, wrist and elbow pain.

There are many different issues that could cause pain to develop in the hands, elbows and wrists. Among them are:

  • Joint Pain
  • Arthritis
  • Tendinitis
  • Tennis/Golfer's Elbow
  • Fractures
  • Sprain's
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • DeQuervain's Tenosynovitis

Hand Pain and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

One of the leading causes of hand and wrist pain is not prompted by an injury at all, but instead is a result of a chronic condition called carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a debilitating syndrome that causes severe pain in the hand and wrist area. The pain typically feels similar to a deep and intense hand cramp, but is not actually caused by any cramping and so it’s not as easily resolved.

Carpal tunnel syndrome develops as a result of heightened stress on the median nerve, often caused by highly repetitive movements with the hand and wrist. Some of the most common tasks in today’s society are among the leading causes of carpal tunnel syndrome, including typing, writing, playing video games, gardening, and anything else that requires repetitive lifting or other hand movements. The condition causes severe pain in the hand and wrists, and may often cause numbness or tingling to develop in the fingers. Those who are most at risk of developing CTS are those who work in a capacity that requires them to constantly engage in repetitive movements with their hands, but those who may be experiencing hormone fluctuations, are at a heightened risk of developing the syndrome.

There are many people who require surgery to overcome carpal tunnel syndrome, but in the majority of situations, surgery can actually be avoided by taking early intervention with targeted Physical therapy. Wearing a brace, working with a physical therapist to counteract the repetitive motions and taking other steps to reduce stress on the median nerve can make dramatic improvements in the quality of life and experience of pain for an individual with carpal tunnel syndrome. While many of these strategies are something you can do at home once you are properly trained, it is important to not attempt to engage in these exercises without guidance from your physical therapist, as improper form or movement could lead to increased discomfort or further injury.

How Are These Conditions Related?

The first step in dealing with hand, wrist or elbow pain is evaluating the source of that pain. Often that’s done in conjunction with your primary care physician, but — especially when the pain isn’t connected to an obvious event such as a car accident — our evaluation helps further assess your current strength and flexibility capabilities. We also note the specific hand and arm positions at which you experience pain.

After your evaluation, the first priority is to use therapeutic techniques to get rid of the pain as soon as possible. After that, we’ll begin to focus on building up your range of motion, especially through stretching and other flexibility maneuvers. Finally, exercises for building strength will be added, so that after your physical therapy course of treatment is over, you can maintain your pain-free life.

When you’re ready to get started, contact us at our Sioux City or Akron location to set up an appointment to get yourself on the road to ridding yourself of your hand, wrist and/or elbow pain.

If you’re currently living with Elbow/wrist hand pain, here’s 7 more reasons why it could be lasting longer than it should:

  • 1. You thought it would go away on it’s own - but it didn’t
  • 2. You went to the Doctor who told you to rest and take painkillers - but pills did nothing to help. All they did was ‘mask’ the pain - and as soon as they wore off your Pain stopped you in your tracks again
  • 3. Family members, or friends, told you everybody gets this pain as they get older, so you just accepted it
  • 4. You sought help from other Healthcare Professionals or a Physical Therapist in the past, but nothing they said or did seemed to help
  • 5. Tried using things like braces or supports but they’ve done nothing to help make the pain any better
  • 6. You thought it would be a good idea to rest because you experienced severe pain and swelling in your arm, but it still irritates you daily
  • 7. You tried a few exercises from ‘Youtube’ - but they felt painful when you did them, and did nothing to ease the pain

If any of these have happened to you, we would love to help you and invite you to book a call to speak with one of our Physical Therapists at our clinic to find out what can be done to help you.

And now some good news for you…

If you have tried any or all of the above things already, it is actually a GOOD THING. It’s good because when we are able to determine what doesn’t or hasn’t worked - we are that much closer to helping you find the thing that does!

Click the link below to schedule a phone call with us for some helpful advice for your problem. The phone call is complimentary and there is no obligation to book any appointments with us after the call is over. Our goal simply is to help you make the right decision about what to do next for your health.

“WHAT CAN I DO TO GET RID OF MY elbow/wrist/hand PAIN QUICKLY?”...

Well, here's 4 things you can do:

  • 1. First off, you need to make a decision about getting help. So many people rest for weeks, hoping that the pain will ‘just go away with time’. But then 6 months down the line they’re still putting up with it, and nothing’s changed… Or the pain and swelling gets worse
  • 2. Next, do the RIGHT exercises - one of the best things to help you ease your pain is to do the right series of progressive exercises - the right exercises given to you by a Physical Therapist will help reduce pain, and allow you to move freely again quick - and make sure that the problems don’t come back any time soon.
  • 3. Listen to your body and avoid overworking the irritated area - the truth is, you and I were not designed to sit and rest and not do anything, however, we do need to be mindful of our body, what it is telling us and what it is going through. Continuing to "push through the pain" will not benefit you, and in fact, this thought may very well make your condition much worse. We also do not want to stop doing everything and just rest either. That is also not beneficial. A good balance between the two with the right set of exercises and other interventions should do the trick.
  • 4. Get real, “hands-on” Physical Therapy – Physical Therapy is proven to help people with Hip pain. In fact, at Impact Physical Therapy and Wellness, it’s a very common issue we see people living with. If your Hip pain is affecting your job, if it stops you from keeping active, or if it threatens your independence and gets in the way of spending quality time with family and friends – Physical Therapy can help get you back to living the life you deserve as quickly as possible.

If you would like to know how the Physical Therapy team at Impact Physical Therapy and Wellness can help you live with less elbow, wrist and hand pain - we invite you to start with a completely free, no-obligation, risk free appointment at our clinic in the Morningside area of Sioux City or in Akron.

Note: This Free Taster Session is something that we offer to people who are very nervous or skeptical about Physical Therapy - unsure of its benefits or if it is right for them. If that sounds like you, then please start with a free taster session so that we can work with you to find out what is wrong and what can be done - without any financial risk on your part.

So the next question is:

“How Can Choosing to See a Physical Therapist at Impact Physical Therapy and Wellness Help You Get Rid of Your hip Pain - In The Next Few Days?”

  • We can quickly take away the pain and stiffness - often inside a couple of sessions.
  • We can help you find out what’s really going on, and get to the root cause of your pain once and for all - often inside 20 minutes
  • Pain can “zap” you of energy and limit your ability to be active - we can help you to enjoy sleeping at night and living with more energy each day
  • We will ensure that your problem is “corrected” and “healed” properly - and we will provide you with the perfect set of exercises that will speed up your recovery
  • We can help you put an end to needing to take all of those painkillers which are obviously not very good for your health long-term
  • Impact Wellness and Physical Therapy can help you get through the day without having to rely on wearing a support to help ease the pain
  • We can help you avoid surgery - and painful injections
  • We can help you keep out of the Doctor’s waiting room...
  • Impact Wellness and Physical Therapy can help you get back to enjoying quality time with family and friends that pain has taken from you...
  • We can help you to finally return to picking up objects around your home, reaching into a cupboard or swinging that golf club again without pain
  • Basically… the Physical Therapy Team and Impact Physical Therapy can help you get back to living life free from daily, annoying and chronic Elbow, Wrist and Hand Pain

I was referred to Keith Roed at Impact Physical Therapy to help me with an arthritic hip. I had no idea how physical therapy could address arthritis, but was ready to try anything. I could hardly believe how good I felt after the first two treatments. Then, when I experienced a setback a short time later, Keith re-evaluated my needs and made the necessary adjustments to my treatment plan. That made an enormous difference! I have been virtually pain free for almost three weeks now and was taught the exercises I can continue doing at home to keep strengthening the muscles that affect my hip. As many of the other reviews have mentioned, not only is Keith a highly competent physical therapist, but treats his patients as people, rather than a particular set of symptoms. With Trish, his friendly receptionist, greeting me as soon as I walked in, the whole experience was incredibly positive. I would recommend Impact Physical Therapy to anyone.

Keith, and the staff, are amazing. The personal attention, you receive is amazing. He uses a very "hands on" approach that other Therapist lack. I've been to several other Therapy Businesses, they pay little attention to you. They truly care about you, which is uncommon in healthcare today.

This is the number one place in the tri-state area for treatment of tennis elbow!! I cannot say enough good things about Keith Roed ,PT. I have a three-year history of tennis elbow, seeing several different therapists, over months of therapy, along with receiving a steroid injection, chiropractic, and other treatment modalities. I DID NOT want to resort to surgery. Thank God I found Impact Wellness. Mr Roed’s Initial assessment was very extensive and impressive, as he looked over not only my elbow, but assessed muscles, joints, etc in my neck, shoulder, wrist, etc , something no other therapist or doctor had done up to this point. Trust me when I say this is not your average therapist. He is extremely dedicated to helping his clients and passionate about his work. His ideas and treatments were so different than what anyone else had done. I was lucky to come across his name while searching on the Internet for a clinic certified in ASTYM therapy. If I could give a higher rating than five stars, I would! P.S. Trish, their secretary is very friendly and helpful with scheduling appointments.

Keith and Eric’s knowledge and experience provided the best treatment plan for me to regain strength, mobility and flexibility. All of the staff are professional, caring and personable. I highly recommend Impact Physical Therapy and Wellness for all physical therapy services.

I had been suffering from a very painful, severe ankle injury for three months before someone told me to go see Keith. In that time, I was hardly able to put any pressure down on my foot. It was difficult to walk, to shower, to change my own clothes; just to name a couple things. In this time, I was completely unable to go to work. I was unable to drive a car. I could not go up and down my basement stairs to do my own laundry or get food from my pantry there. The list of things I could do but only with great difficulty and the list of things I just totally could not do at all were significantly longer than the list of things I could do. My independence, my quality of life, my job and my health (physical, emotional and mental) were suffering. By the time I got to Keith, I was so depressed seeing no improvement in my condition. I felt hopeless things would ever improve. I was very scared I would never get any abilities I lost back and then what would I do?!I saw a new doctor, and he told me to go see Keith, that he could really help make a difference for me. Biggest game changer, ever!!! In even a short time with him, I was able to walk again. I could drive again. I could take a shower without having to ask someone to help me. I could go freely and safely up and down my stairs. I gained strength, confidence and hope. As we continued to work together, I was even able to go back to work!!! I really grew to enjoy my time in physical therapy with Keith. All the staff are so kind, respectful, professional, and helpful. They really make you feel like family and that you are cared for and valued. They absolutely want you to be there, and they want to see you succeed and thrive. I wish I had known about him sooner. I cannot even imagine the amount of time, resources, pain, further damage, and even more, that I could have saved myself from. I really feel like I got my life back.

When I started seeing Keith, I had actually been to another physical therapist in town and had almost given up hope. I was told to live with the pain and accept I could not rotate my arm/shoulder in certain directions. I decided to try pt again, and cannot be more happy that I chose to come to Impact Physical Therapy. Keith was thorough, did regular measurements to see what needed worked on, and did the Astem therapy which also helped me heal even quicker. He stayed on top of my exercises and gave me ones that were easy to do at home as well. I went from needing help putting on certain types of clothing to having full range of motion and no pain while I move. I HIGHLY recommend going to see Keith and getting your life back!

I want to Thank Eric and Keith for a great experience at Impact Therapy! I was skeptical about Physical Therapy as I hadn't had a great experience the last time I did PT at another location following a back surgery. Prior to this PT I was having extreme pain in my neck, numbness in my arm and virtually no sleep, but I didn't want to go through another surgery. Long story short, after just a couple visits with Impact Therapy I was seeing results. Now, after 6 weeks I'm pain free and no surgery needed! I learned the importance of good posture and some simple stretches that work amazing to keep me feeling great. I like the open conversation with these guys as they listen and focus on the pain and provided the relief that I needed. Thank you guys very much and I will definitely tell others of my success!
