Astym/IASTM technique - with Impact Physical Therapy and Wellness

Astym/IASTM technique treatment

We believe in innovation and providing our patient's with the very best techniques to improve their condition. This allows for better, faster healing and a more enjoyable therapy experience to get you back to the things you love.

As part of that dedication, Impact Therapists are trained in specific advanced soft-tissue techniques such as Astym and IASTM. Both have very similar physiologic properties but may differ slightly in application technique.

Astym therapy provides solutions for all kinds of soft tissue problems, even hard-to-treat conditions that have not been resolved through other methods in the past.

Astym instruments are designed to maximize the effectiveness and safety of the Astym treatment – for both you and your therapist. They’re included as part of your therapist’s certification, and are unable to be purchased anywhere. Astym instrumentation is properly registered with the FDA as medical devices.

While being treated with Astym therapy, you’re encouraged to stay active. Your therapist will work with you to develop a customized stretching and strengthening routine, which will maximize the strength and function of your affected tissues.

IASTM is the acronym for instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization. It is a type of manual therapy that utilizes specialized ergonomic tools that massage and slide across the skin gently.

The IASTM technique differs from Astym in that it uses a set of stainless steel instruments to help soft tissue injuries to the connective tissues, muscles, neurological tissues, and skin.

It is effective for soft tissue injuries like repetitive stress injury, strains, sprains, and joint subluxations. This technique has had proven results for patients.

The benefits of the Astym/IASTM technique include:

  • Increased rate of volume and blood flow to affected areas to enhance healing
  • Breakdown of collagen cross-links
  • Boost in cellular activity for good health
  • Reduction in inflammation
  • Reduction in pain for a better quality of life
  • Increased mobility and ability to perform daily tasks

Common Conditions Treated with Astym/IASTM:

  • Acute or Chronic Pain
  • Sprains and Strains
